Background

Following the exhibition Documenting the City: Art and Society in Newport (May-June 2007), which included public art and the commemoration of Chartism, Newport Museum and Art Gallery was approached by Public Art Wales to discuss the  recording of the Newport Chartist Mural. As a result the Newport Chartist Mural Documentation Project was established with the funding support of Modus.

Aims

Commencing with documentation of the the Newport Chartist Mural we plan to:

  • explore the immediate civic context of public art in Newport
  • plus the wider landscape of Chartism and its commemorative landmarks in Monmouthshire and South Wales as a whole.
  • and hence this documentation of cultural artefacts leads us to further engagement with the history of Chartism.

The new information environment of the Internet provides an opportunity to extend the museological archive of Chartism, and the potential to engage wider conversation upon the heritage of Chartism and its vital role in the formation of the democratic  public sphere.

  • Museological aims | The Newport Chartist Mural Documentation Project will pursue two fundamental museological aims: to record  this popular cultural artefact, and to interpret its historical significance within the wider social and cultural history of Newport and Monmouthshire.
  • Digital archive | In the first instance we will produce a photographic and video "facsimilie" record of the Newport Chartist Mural, and these will be archived online as public domain images.
  • Ongoing research | Further research plus online resources may explore the wider context of Chartism and public art in Newport and South Wales, the Chartist history and geography of South Wales, and current developments in the heritage of Chartism.
